Scale & the Incas. (2018). Andrew James Hamilton. New Jersey : Oxford : Princeton University Press.
Although questions of form and style are fundamental to art history, the issue of scale has been surprisingly neglected. Yet, scale and scaled relationships are essential to the visual cultures of many societies from around the world, especially in the Andes. In Scale and the Incas, Andrew Hamilton presents a groundbreaking theoretical framework for analyzing scale, and then applies this approach to Inca art, architecture, and belief systems. The Incas were one of humanity's great civilizations, but their lack of a written language has prevented widespread appreciation of their sophisticated intellectual tradition. Expansive in scope, this book examines many famous works of Inca art including Machu Picchu and the Dumbarton Oaks tunic, more enigmatic artifacts like the Sayhuite Stone and Capacocha offerings, and a range of relatively unknown objects in diverse media including fiber, wood, feathers, stone, and metalwork. Ultimately, Hamilton demonstrates how the Incas used scale as an effective mode of expression in their vast multilingual and multiethnic empire. Lavishly illustrated with stunning color plates created by the author, the book's pages depict artifacts alongside scale markers and silhouettes of hands and bodies, allowing readers to gauge scale in multiple ways. The pioneering visual and theoretical arguments of Scale andthe Incas not only rewrite understandings of Inca art, but also provide a benchmark for future studies of scale in art from other cultures.

Uniforms. (2009). Bill Dunn, Peter Kent.
London : Laurence King.
Look around and uniforms are everywhere. They're a way of belonging and of making people belong. Armies, police forces, and militias led the way, but today they're used by a new generation of service industries, from security guards to delivery firms. Subconsciously, uniforms oil the wheels of the world. We accept orders from a uniformed guard, respect the diagnosis of a doctor or nurse, and feel better about entrusting that important package to a uniformed private delivery company operative. Uniforms inspire trust, respect, and sometimes even fear. This book traces the rise of the uniform in pictures up to the present day, from early military uniforms and on to the Second World War, from which a lot of uniform items made it through into civilian life, coinciding with the birth of the teenage phenomenon in the 1950s. It examines the different ways in which the uniform is used: as a means of control, of morale building, and of self-expression. Featuring uniforms from all walks of life military, school, sports teams, and workwearthe book examine show fashion has been influenced by uniform design and how fashion has, in turn, been reinterpreted by uniform designers.

John Richardson : at home. (2019). John Richardson. New York : Rizzoli International Publications.
John Richardson's Bohemian Aristocrat interiors are, and have been throughout his life, filled with fine English and American antiques; interesting textiles; works of art by friends, legendary artists Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Lucian Freud, Andy Warhol, and Robert Mapplethorpe; vivid color combinations; and objects that prompt stories from a well-lived life. From London and the stately buildings of Stowe School, in the idyllic Buckinghamshire countryside, to the south of France, New York City, and the Connecticut countryside, Richardson shares the story of his life through places, objects, and people--a form of autobiography, gloriously illustrated, entertainingly told. In stories about his residences in the south of France (at the Château de Castille with celebrated art historian and collector Douglas Cooper), London (a set of rooms at the famed Albany apartment house), and the United States (glamorous New York City apartments and a country retreat in Connecticut), Richardson reveals his life through a mélange of interesting places, mementoes, works of art, furnishings that prompt stories, and an endlessly fascinating assortment of friends and acquaintances--Fernand Léger, Lady Diana Cooper, Fran Lebowitz, and Oscar and Annette de la Renta, to name a few.
