ספר זה סוקר את תולדות הזן משורשיו הבודהיסטיים בהודו, דרך היווצרותו בסין והתפתחותו ביפן. תוך כך הוא מרחיב על ההגות ואורח החיים הקשורים בזן, על מורי הזן הגדולים בסין וביפן ועל נוכחות הזן במכלול האמנותי במדינות אלה.
מחבר הספר, פרופ׳ יעקב רז, הוא מרצה לזן בודהיזם ולתרבות יפן בחוג ללימודי מזרח אסיה באוניברסיטת תל־אביב. כתב ספרים ומאמרים רבים בנושא הזן. בין ספריו: ״שיחות מטורפות - מעשי זן", ״איש מחפש פר״(עם ד״ר דן דאור), ״טוקיו הלוך חזור״ ועוד. לאחרונה פרסם תרגום מוער של יומן ההאיקו ״הדרך הצרה לאוקו״ מאת מאצואו באשו.
